Anyone spending their holidays in camping sites and bungalow villages in Liguria is guaranteed a fascinating experience thanks to the spectacular landscapes and food and wine traditions of this region. Liguria is located in north-west Italy, at the border with France, and is washed by the Ligurian Sea. The region's capital city is Genoa, an important port on the Tyrrhenian Sea, a city with great maritime traditions. Liguria is the ideal summer holiday destination, thanks to 330 km of coast that stretches from the south, at the border with Tuscany, to the north-west, at the border with France and Monaco.
Liguria's Riviera, between Riviera di Levante and Riviera di Ponente
When organising a beach holiday in Liguria, the first step is to choose which stretch of Liguria's Riviera one wants to visit. Camping sites and bungalow villages in Liguria are located all along the 330 km of its coast. However, landscapes and tourist facilities vary significantly depending if one chooses the Riviera di Levante or the Riviera di Ponente, respectively at east and west of Genoa.
In fact, the Riviera di Levante is characterised by a rocky coastline, interrupted by charming coves, with sandy or pebbly beaches: Camogli, Portofino, the Gulf of Tigullio, Cinque Terre and old villages such as Tellaro, Lerici and Porto Venere in the Gulf of La Spezia or Gulf of the Poets. These are all beautiful seaside destinations, however, Cinque Terre is the greatest attraction. One of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites since 1997, Cinque Terre are a string of five characteristic old villages built on rocky cliffs that drop sharply into the sea. They include Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore. The landscape changes, with sandy beaches, ideal for family holidays with children, when moving to the Riviera di Ponente, or Riviera of the Flowers, in the province of Imperia and Riviera delle Palme, near Savona. Thanks to a more accessible coastline, camping sites and villages with bungalows are an even better choice for anyone who wishes to visit places such as Varazze, Finale Ligure, Loano, Alassio, Andora, Diano Marina, Sanremo(where Italy's most famous music festival is held) and Bordighera.
